Dubai’s heritage is deeply ingrained in its identity, serving as a vital link to its history and roots. Recognizing the importance of safeguarding this heritage, Hamdan Bin Mohammed has greenlit the second phase of Dubai’s Heritage Architecture Preservation Project. This initiative aims to foster a deeper appreciation and understanding of Dubai’s evolution into a global metropolis by preserving its architectural legacy.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the ongoing commitment to preserving heritage areas across Dubai, underscoring the significance of maintaining cultural authenticity throughout the emirate. The project seeks to promote cultural continuity and highlight Dubai’s historical interactions with the world, showcasing the diverse influences that have shaped its global impact.
The second phase of the project will focus on restoring 35 heritage sites and buildings, including old neighborhoods that Sheikh Hamdan referred to as an “open museum of human heritage.” He stressed the responsibility of celebrating history and safeguarding architectural treasures for future generations.
These heritage areas, situated amidst modern Dubai, serve as poignant reminders of the city’s journey and aspirations. Additionally, Sheikh Hamdan has directed efforts to enhance the appeal of historical areas and modern landmarks to attract more visitors, aiming to strengthen Dubai’s national identity and elevate its prominence globally.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, affirmed the municipality’s dedication to preserving historical landmarks, emphasizing the pivotal role of these sites in Dubai’s narrative. The restoration efforts in this phase will cover buildings dating from the 1960s to the 1990s, reflecting Dubai’s recent architectural history and its socio-economic transformations.
The comprehensive preservation endeavors not only honor Dubai’s past but also aim to impart its rich heritage to future generations, ensuring that the emirate’s legacy endures for years to come.
