About Al Baik Foods
The Rise of Al Baik: A Saudi Fried Chicken Favorite
In 1974, Saudi Arabia’s fast-food landscape was about to change. Shakour Abu Ghazalah, a Palestinian-Saudi entrepreneur with a vision, opened the doors to Jeddah’s first pressure-fried chicken restaurant. This wasn’t your typical fried chicken joint though. Abu Ghazalah, true to his entrepreneurial spirit, aimed to provide high-quality, delicious food at affordable prices, all served in a clean and welcoming environment.
The restaurant, initially called Broast Restaurant (referencing the unique cooking method), had a slow start. During the first few months, they served a mere 100 customers a day. However, within a year, something remarkable happened. Word of Al Baik’s mouthwatering chicken spread, and lines began to form outside the restaurant.
This early success can be attributed to a few key factors. First, pressure-fried chicken was a novel concept in Saudi Arabia, offering a unique and flavorful alternative to traditional fried chicken. Second, Abu Ghazalah developed a secret recipe of 18 herbs and spices, creating a signature taste that kept customers coming back for more. Finally, Al Baik prioritized cleanliness and a welcoming atmosphere, setting itself apart from other fast-food options.
In 1986, solidifying its growing reputation, Al Baik officially registered its trademark. The name itself, derived from an Arabic word meaning “Pick, Choose, or Select,” reflected the freedom of choice customers had when ordering their meals.
Over the years, Al Baik continued to expand, reaching the holy city of Mecca in 1990 and catering to pilgrims during Hajj. They strategically opened seasonal locations in Mina to serve the massive influx of visitors. The chain further broadened its reach by entering Medina in 2001 and introducing a limited menu food court concept called Albaik Express in Mecca.
Despite its success, Al Baik has remained remarkably focused within Saudi Arabia. While they opened their first international branches in Bahrain in 2020, the chain has largely resisted the urge for global expansion. This focus on the domestic market has only strengthened their position as the undisputed king of fried chicken in Saudi Arabia. With their commitment to quality, affordability, and a unique flavor profile, Al Baik’s story continues to be a delicious testament to homegrown Saudi Arabian success.
